Independent Art

September 14, 2004

From an article by Philip Kennicott of the Washington Post:

In a culture that processes information through controversy — through the conflicts set up in reality television, through punditry, gossip, scandal and gotcha journalism — independent art thrives and fails and is reinvented to thrive again. Arts that are fast on the uptake, that can react to political and cultural news with speed and without fear of being edited, bleeped or otherwise censored, are rewarded with substantially more attention than the old-guard arts can generate. Much of the visual arts, alternative music, contemporary dance and theater and all the unclassifiable Web-based and performance arts, are culturally vibrant. They give us plays about the prisoners held at Guantanamo Bay (the play “Guantanamo” opened in New York last month); or lampoon the obfuscations of major-party politics (in a media installation called “The Experimental Party Disinformation Center,” also in New York); or all the lovely games and provocations dealing in gender, sexuality, race and class that fill out the major visual-art biennials, year after year.

Let us Pray

September 04, 2004

The Republican Convention has come to an end, checkpoints have been removed from the vicinity of Penn Station, the demonstrators have gone home, and the artworks are coming down, including our very own Experimental Party DisInformation Center.

What was accomplished?

The Republicans are rallying, the democracts are deparately searching for ammunition, the public is going about its Labor Day retreat, and America seems to be unaffected by a week of extraordinary lies and deception, all in the spirit of American politics.

Let us pray.

America is very ill. America has a fever. America is on the brink of dying. And still, life goes on…

America watches TV, goes to the movies, shops the Malls, lays on the beach, as though everything is normal. But it is not.

America is dying, and tonight, for the close of the Experimental Party DisInformation Center, we intend to deliver a collective eulogy for this great nation on the brink of mass suicide.

In less than 60 days, America will go to the polls, it will think it is exercising democracy, but democracy as we know it is slipping away. Democracy has been undermined by the media, hypnotizing a nation of robotic brethren, oblivious to their Orwellian trickery. America’s politics has become a staged spectacle, the conventions are nothing more than infomercials, there is little left of the time-honored process we associate with a gathering of delegates carrying out their designated business. Conventions are now slick programs made for television. Pure propaganda.

Yes, America is dying and we intend to deliver the last rites. Please join us, tonight from 6 - 8 pm, at the Experimental Party DisInformation Center and participate in the post-mortem lounge.

Let us pray.
